Teeth whitening (or bleaching) is a simple, cosmetic treatment used to change the color of natural teeth enamel and is an ideal way to enhance the beauty of your smile.

Because having whiter teeth has now become the number one aesthetic concern of most patients, there are a number of ways to whiten teeth.  The most popular method is using a home teeth whitening system that will whiten teeth dramatically.  Since teeth whitening only works on natural teeth enamel, it is important to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, etc.  Replacement of any restorations will be done after bleaching so they will match the newly bleached teeth.

Teeth whitening is not permanent.  A touch-up maybe needed every several years, and more often if you smoke, drink coffee, tea, or wine.

Reasons for teeth whitening:

  • Fluorosis (excessive fluoridation during teeth development).
  • Normal wear of outer teeth layer.
  • Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, etc.).
  • Yellow, brown stained teeth.

What does teeth whitening involve?

Our office offers two types of whitening services through Colgate: In-Office Whitening that is done here in our office or Take-Home Whitening which entails a kit that you can pick up and whiten in the convenience of your own home!

During our In-office Whitening procedure, we will perform a "Before" shade match and get started. We will then apply three rounds of whitening serum to the teeth with a 10-minute light in between each round. The light will activate for 5 minutes on each arch. After the three rounds, we finish with an "After" shade match. At the end of the appointment you take home the light used and a touch up pen - so you can do your own touch ups as desired! Our Take-Home Whitening kits are similar to the In-Office Whitening, but require just one round of serum.

Regardless of which option you pick, you will receive care instructions for your teeth and be encouraged to visit your dentist regularly to help maintain a beautiful, healthy, white smile.
